Chris and I have just been in Melbourne for our granddaughter’s third birthday. One of her favourite games was hide and seek.
But the funny thing was, she seemed to enjoy being found even more than hiding. Sometimes she would make little noises. Sometimes she would give clues. Sometimes she would simply announce, “Here I am!”
It made me think about how often people around us may be more open to spiritual conversation than we realise. They may not announce it clearly, but sometimes there are little clues — a question, a worry, a comment about family, suffering, work, or the future.
This week, in our online MyFriends Lifestyle training, we talked about what I am calling Water Fountain Conversations.
In the old days, people would often gather around the water fountain or water cooler at work. They were not having a formal meeting. They were not listening to a lecture. They were just talking about ordinary life — family, work, sport, the weekend, the weather, or whatever had happened that week.
Water Fountain Conversations are short, natural conversations that grow out of ordinary life and gently point people toward Jesus. They are not forced. They are not scripted. They are simply little moments where we speak about what we have seen and heard of Jesus in everyday life.
Sometimes a comment about family, work, church, prayer, suffering, or the weekend can become a small opening. We do not need to turn every conversation into a full Gospel presentation. We are simply learning to notice the openings God gives us and respond naturally.I have recorded a short video to help explain and illustrate this idea: https://vimeo.com/1192127979
As you watch, think of one person who might be encouraged by this simple approach.
My prayer is that thousands of ordinary conversations — in homes, shops, workplaces, schools, parks, and neighbourhoods — will become little openings where people begin to wonder about Jesus.
Serving with you,
