When the conversation does not happen

When the conversation does not happen

Last week Chris went to Vijay*’s home.

Over the years, our families have shared meals together, celebrated birthdays, helped each other in practical ways, and become part of one another’s lives in so many other ways.

Chris had a simple idea. Some school uniforms needed altering, and she thought sewing together might create a natural opportunity to talk more about life and Jesus.

Chris and Vijay had a cup of tea. Then, Chris brought out the sewing and invited Vijay to join her.

But Vijay replied, “Actually, I have some work on the computer I need to catch up on.”

So for the next twenty minutes, Chris worked on the sewing and Vijay worked on her computer. Not much conversation happened at all.

I smiled when Chris told me, because that is often how real life works. We may hope for a meaningful spiritual conversation, but we cannot force it. We cannot script it. We cannot control how someone else responds.

But we can keep showing up. We can keep caring. We can keep creating space. And when a natural opening comes, we can gently share a small story from our own life that points toward Jesus.

I call these Water Fountain Conversations.

They are not formal presentations. They are not arguments. They are not attempts to force the whole Gospel into one conversation.

They are short, natural, personal conversations that come out of everyday life and gently help someone become curious about God.

They might begin with what happened at church, something your family did, a prayer you prayed, a conversation you had, or a story from the Bible that connected with ordinary life.

In Acts 4, Peter and John said they could not stop speaking about what they had seen and heard. That is a helpful picture for us. We do not need to sound impressive. We can simply speak about what we have seen and heard as we walk with Jesus.

I have made a short video about these Water Fountain Conversations. It gives several practical examples of how ordinary moments can become gentle openings for spiritual conversation.

I encourage you to watch it and ask Jesus to help you notice one natural opportunity this week.

Not pressure.
Not arguments.
Not forcing decisions.

Just a little drip of spiritual conversation over time.

Have a great week talking with people about Jesus,
