Last week I was talking with Ryan Sherring about how he shares the Gospel with his friends.
Ryan says a lot of his friends are interested in spiritual things, but they are not interested in going into a church building.
Funny how so many groups focus on inviting people to come to the church buildling to hear the Gospel. They are asking the non-Christian to be the cross-cultural worker -- to learn the church culture, learning when to stand, when to sit, find pages in a hymnal or join in new songs on the screen. Church buildings are important and we want our friends to join us in worship, but Ryan thinks that our order is wrong.
"Invite people to Jesus before you invited them to church", he says.
Ryan finds that many of his friends have a post-modern, individualistic mindset. They are not interested in hearing abstract religious truth.
They are, however, very interested in experiencing God. So Ryan meets them where they are at, telling briefly how God is making a difference in his life. How God is answering his prayers.
Then when he notices that they are having difficulties in their life,he asks if he can pray for them. Right there. In the name of Jesus. With his eyes open. He then follows up to see how Jesus answers.
It is amazing to hear how many people are interested in learning more about Jesus when he answers their prayers.
Ryan and I have some more ideas on how to help your friends come to know Jesus. Check out our interview and see if you are interested in the MyFriends Lifestyle.
