A Grandfather's Legacy Conversation

Sharing the Gospel with your Family

Many of us long for deeper spiritual conversations with our children or grandchildren—but feel unsure how to begin. We pray. We wait. We wonder if anything is changing. This story, shared with me by Paul Watson, is a quiet reminder that God often answers those prayers not through pressure or arguments, but through patience, listening, and unexpected openings.

A Grandfather’s Legacy Conversation

For months, Phil had been praying for a deeper spiritual connection with his grandson. His grandson had always been polite but hesitant—sometimes resistant—whenever the topic of faith came up.

Phil didn’t push. He prayed. He waited.

Recently, an unexpected opening came during a conversation about family history. Phil’s grandson had begun taking an interest in their heritage, asking questions about past generations. Phil saw an opportunity—and took it.

He began sharing four specific stories from their family’s history where God had clearly intervened. These weren’t abstract sermons or theological debates—they were real, personal accounts of faith in action, passed down through generations. For the first time, Phil’s grandson listened without resistance. He leaned in, asked follow-up questions, and seemed genuinely interested.

It was a small moment, but a breakthrough nonetheless.

Phil walked away knowing that seeds had been planted—seeds rooted in both family legacy and faith. While the full harvest may take time, this was a tangible answer to prayer and a reminder that God can use everyday conversations to open hearts. Now Phil is mobilizing prayer, asking God to allow this spiritual conversation to bear fruit, allow Phil to share stories from the Bible, and start a Discovery Bible Study with his grandson.

As Phil later reflected, “Sometimes the best way to share the gospel is to tell the stories of what God has already done—especially in our own family.”

This story challenges us to ask a simple question: What stories has God already written into our lives and families? Those stories may be the very tools God wants to use to begin deeper conversations—naturally, respectfully, and at the right time.
