Marilyn* wanted to spend more time with people who didn’t yet know Jesus. But she didn’t want to simply look around and choose a ministry for herself. She wanted God to lead her.

So she prayed that God would bring her into regular contact with people who were not Christians.

A couple of weeks later, Marilyn was bowling with a friend. She had bowled for years and enjoyed it, although she didn’t consider herself particularly good. But that day she bowled a perfect game — 300.

When she took her score sheet to the counter, the woman said, “Too bad you didn’t do this in a league. There’s prize money for this.”

The prize money didn’t interest Marilyn very much, but the word league did.

She asked about the bowling leagues and joined one. Suddenly, every week she was spending regular time with women who didn’t yet know Jesus. She got to know them, became involved in their lives, and they became friends.

Eventually Marilyn invited several of them to her home for lunch and shared how she had come to know God and how they could know Him too.

What I like about Marilyn’s story is how ordinary it is. God didn’t send her to some dramatic new ministry. He used something she already enjoyed — bowling.

That makes me wonder:

What ordinary part of your life might God use to connect you with people who don’t yet know Jesus?

It might be your workplace, your neighbourhood, a sporting club, a hobby, your extended family, or relationships that cross cultures and countries.

The important question is:

Who has God already placed in your life?

This is one of the foundations of the MyFriends Lifestyle — learning to pray, care and share Jesus naturally with the people God has already placed around us.

On Monday 14 September, I’m holding a free online MyFriends Worldwide Introduction.

If you have been reading these weekly emails and would like to move from reading about these ideas to actually experiencing them, I would love you to join us. We’ll practise some simple ways of living this lifestyle, and afterwards you can decide whether you want to continue with the nine-session MyFriends training.

Let’s pray:

Lord Jesus, open our eyes to the people you have already placed around us. Show us where you are at work, and help us take simple steps to love, care for and share you naturally with them. Amen.

P.S. Who do you know who might enjoy learning how to live on mission with the people God has already placed around them? Please forward this email and invite them to join us.
