Help Your Family Focus on the Heart of Christmas

Help Your Family Focus on the Heart of Christmas

When I think back to Christmas as a child, some of my most meaningful memories are from the weeks leading up to it—what we called Advent. It wasn’t just about decorations or gift shopping; it was about pausing as a family to focus on what Christmas is truly about: celebrating the birth of Jesus. Each week, we’d gather for a simple family Advent service.

I still remember how it worked. Before the first week we made a wreath with with space for four candles. Then each week I’d read Scripture and lead the prayers while my brothers played instruments—one on the piano, another on the trumpet, and my dad on the violin. We’d sing Christmas songs and then light candles- one on the first week, two on the second and so forth.  Our mom always ended the evening with dessert, which made it feel special. These gatherings weren’t elaborate, but they brought us together, helping us to reflect on the hope, peace, joy, and love that Jesus brings.

Looking back, I see how those moments shaped my faith and gave me a foundation for the years to come. Advent became more than a countdown to Christmas; it was a way to focus our hearts on Christ. That’s why I’m sharing a simple Family Advent Service you can use with your family this year. It’s a great way to create meaningful moments and help everyone stay centered on the heart of Christmas.

What is Advent?

It’s a season of preparation and anticipation in the four weeks leading up to Christmas. The word "Advent" means "coming" or "arrival." It’s a time to reflect on Jesus’ first coming as a baby in Bethlehem and to look forward to His promised return. Each week focuses on a theme—hope, peace, joy, and love—reminding us of God’s faithfulness and promises.

This Week’s Theme: Hope

At Christmas, we celebrate the hope Jesus brings—a light shining in the darkness and the assurance of God’s love and redemption. Why not share this hope with a neighbor or coworker? You could say something as simple as, "This week I’m reflecting on how Jesus brings hope—what’s been giving you hope lately?"

To help you celebrate Advent, I’ve created a Family Advent Service outline you can download here: Download the Family Advent Service. It’s an easy way to bring your family together each week to read Scripture, light a candle, and pray. Whether you’ve never observed Advent before or it’s part of your tradition, this can help make the season more meaningful.

I’d also love to hear how you’re preparing for Christmas! Join the conversation on my Facebook page. Let’s share ideas, encourage each other, and talk about how we can make Jesus the focus of this season.
