Unexpected Opportunities to Share Our Faith

An Unexpected Opportunity

Happy New Year! I hope yours was filled with joy and new beginnings. My wife and I began our year by traveling to Melbourne to visit our granddaughter and her parents. While there, we attended their church. It was a pretty standard service, but what happened afterward was anything but routine.

As the service concluded, I headed over to grab a coffee and a biscuit. With my coffee in hand, I turned around to find my family—only to realize I couldn’t spot anyone I recognized. That’s when I noticed a man standing alone, looking a bit lost.

I felt a nudge to approach him. “Hi, my name is Bob,” I said. He introduced himself as Matthew. I asked how long he’d been attending, and he shared that he’d been coming here for about two months. Curious, I asked, “What motivated you to come to this church?”

Matthew explained that two people had knocked on his door to talk about “God the Mother.” This concept didn’t sit well with him. In fact it motivated him want to reconnect with a Christian church.  He had already tried a couple, but liked this one better.

I asked if he had joined a small group yet. He hadn’t, mentioning the groups were on break. Just then, I noticed my son-in-law, Dave, across the room. I called him over and introduced him to Matthew.

You see, I’ve learned that for someone to feel connected in a church, they need to know at least five people. Since I wouldn’t be there the next week, I wanted to ensure Matthew had a friendly face to greet him.

Dave is great at connecting with people spiritually. After chatting a bit, he pulled out his phone and opened an app called GodTools. He showed Matthew a quick overview of the Four Spiritual Laws:

  1. God loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life.
  2. People are sinful and separated from God.
  3. Jesus Christ is God's only provision for our sin.
  4. We must individually receive Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord.

Dave asked, “Does this make sense to you?” Matthew nodded, saying it did. Dave then suggested they go through another section of the app called Satisfied, which explains how to live a Spirit-filled life. He encouraged Matthew to download the app, and they agreed to discuss the article next week.

To me, the most important part of the whole service is how God turned a seemingly ordinary moment into something extraordinary. It started with a simple, “Hi, my name is Bob.” God used that small step to begin a discipleship journey for Matthew and Dave.

This week, I challenge you to look for someone who might be standing alone, whether at church, work, or even in your neighborhood. Introduce yourself and see where the conversation leads. You never know how God might use that moment to touch someone’s life—and yours.

Let’s trust Him to guide us in these everyday opportunities to share His love.
