Will they learn the truth about Jesus -- Australian verion

Will they learn the truth about Jesus?

I went to a special high school designed to cater to a variety of learning styles.

For the math class 150 of us sat in a lecture hall once a week.  A full 40 minute lecture on new content. I found the lectures boring, so I spent most of my time doodling.

Then we would meet in small groups twice a week where the teacher would ask students to put their work up on the board and explain it to the rest of the class.  You had better be prepared because you never knew who the teacher would pick on.  I remember how the class laughed at me when I was reading back a geometry proof I had written about the two lines being parallel.  One line of my text was slanted up, and other other line slanted down.  My proof was right; my presentation was good for a laugh.

The small groups were a good strategy because sometimes students learn better from other students, and having to explain something cements it in your head.

And then we had an hour math lab.  This was designed for the procrastinators who needed focused time to get their homework done.

What was my favourite way of learning math?  Getting together with a few of my friends during a free period and doing the WHOLE week's homework in one go. It didn't hurt that two of my friends were ranked #1 and #2 in math. Hanging around them I quickly became ranked #3.

So how does this apply evangelism?

We need to remember that people learn in different ways.  Some people like to:

  • listen
  • watch videos
  • read
  • study thoroughly or
  • ask questions

If our method of sharing the Gospel does not line up with their way of learning then all they may be getting is meaningless noise.

I wrote a website where people can learn about God in their own language using their preferred learning style in any of 200 languages.  It is called mylanguage.net.au .  You can print your own business cards using this template or contact samy.metry@om.org

You probably have a prefered style of sharing the Gospel, but may I encourage you to consider what might be best for your audience.

Over the next few weeks I be focusing on ways you can use these different learning styles in sharing the Gospel.

Before i go, let's pray:

"Lord Jesus, thank you for giving us the greatest message of all time.  I pray that we will be sensitive in knowing how to share this.  We don't want people to be hearing meaningless noise.  We want them to fall in love with you and to joyfully respond to the Gospel.  Guide and direct us in our interactions.  Let us be both bold and sensitive.  We look forward to what YOU will do in and through us.  Amen"

Have fun connecting people to Jesus and other believers.
